Macular Degeneration

The leading cause of vision loss in people 50 years or older, macular degeneration is a condition that impacts the central portion of the retina, a part of the eye called the macula. This part of the eye controls your ability to read, drive a car, recognize faces and colors and see objects in fine detail. The risk factors for this condition include being overweight, having a diet high in saturated fats, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol, smoking, age, and a family history of macular degeneration. The condition has different stages, is irreversible, and can worsen over time if left untreated.

In an effort to reduce the risks of macular degeneration, we recommend all patients eat a healthy diet rich in antioxidants found in green leafy vegetables and brightly colored fruits and vegetables. We also recommend regular use of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s damaging UV rays. Most importantly, do not smoke, and if you do smoke, get help to quit. We can discuss your risk factors and additional steps required for high-risk individuals at your comprehensive exam.
