Glaucoma is damage to the nerve that sends information from the eye to the brain. When this nerve is damaged, vision loss can occur – usually starting with peripheral vision and slowly progressing to total blindness. Glaucoma can be caused by increased pressure inside the eye, but it is also possible to develop glaucoma even with normal eye pressure. Referred to as “the silent blinder,” the signs of glaucoma are usually undetectable without regular, comprehensive eye examinations.
At IdealEyes, we screen every patient for glaucoma risk factors and, when necessary, we will perform additional testing to thoroughly examine the health and function of the optic nerve. When needed, we can initiate treatment to manage the effects of glaucoma to help prevent blindness before it occurs.
